Reading #3 Deconstructivism
This image conveys the idea that some architects become starchitects by standing out from breaking away from what is typically seen in everyday architecture. But sometimes the goal of being unique can do more damage than good because it becomes less thoughtful and rational. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Uniqueness may create attention- good or bad- but it becomes detrimental for observing architects because it pushes this uncalled-for precedent for architecture.
SUMMARIES
Delirious new york Rem Koolhaas
This book touches base on Manhattan's inconsistency of character and architectural style. Rem called this phenomenon of inconsistency, “Manhattanism” - a human-made product “to live inside fantasy.” Because of Manhattan's risk to create whatever it wants to create in terms of architecture. This inspired observing architects to take the same risky approach on their work- and it was taken too far.
Manifesto Lebbeus Woods
Lebbeus makes it clear that architecture and war are synonyms for one another. There are many hardships and challenges faced when doing architecture such as time and history. But because architecture is like war, it helps create new eras, it sets new precedents.
Suburban Life and Public Space Margaret Crawford
The perception of mall design has been skewed to many for so long. But Margaret took it upon themselves to change that perception. They create and set the precedent of planning & order and it adapts fast to any circumstance. It helped shape suburban life. Eventually, new variations of malls started coming along, but the idea remained- to provide community and service. But once again, no matter how different, it helped shape suburban life. Eventually, the simple theory of malls stretches out to different communities and programs- where one had more arcades or the other filled with luxury stores. But they should not always remain the same and copies of one another because they must adapt to their environment.
Deconstructivist architecture Philip Johnson and Mark Wigley
Philip Johnson took it upon himself to exhibit architectural works/ideas of seven architects who gave an example of “deconstructivism”. DeconstructivismIt can be described as a challenge and rebellion against traditional architecture, which at that moment in time was modern architecture. It broke away from using simple geometry to create massings that were intricate and less geometrical-thought was placed. The rule to create deconstructivism is to break away from the architectural-norm.
