Architectural Canon Theories - Diagrams

Image
Parametricism The diagram shows that massings can be taken advantage of by using simulations. These simulations vary from wind to solar to daylight analysis. Parametricism The diagram shows that massings are taken into control using parametric software  such as Grasshopper. One set of rules or inputs can drastically change the outcome of the massing. Sustainability Different design decisions may change the sustainable aspect of a building. The Louis Vuitton Foundation building, it consists of large glass panels formed in a unique shape. These glass panels almost act as a second facade whilst there is a massing underneath this blob-like structure.

Reading #8 - Infrastructure Space

Image
The growth of infrastructure would not be as rapid or as significant, had it been for the usage of the assembly line. The information regarding the impact infrastructure has on a community- varies. If we take highways as an example- the "stories" told of highways were quite positive. For example, highways were promised to increase the pace of transportation and provide "uninterrupted movement." But in the end, it brought congestion. Another example is the suburban homes in Levittown- which were a product of the assembly line. The idea of making use of the assembly line sounded outstanding to produce multiple copies of homes at a rapid pace. But the creation of this infrastructure would also have its impact, both positive and negative. It provided homes to many and provided a routine to many- but it did not allow for individuality. We must realize that these pieces of infrastructure are only as impactful by those in a higher power who put these plans out. The impac...

Reading #7 - Anthropocene and Biomorphic Design

We need to stop discussing theories or searching for the ones at fault for climate change and instead act on the problem to disclose it.  The ecological approach in architecture may not be part of the art in architecture, but the realism (architecture) and unfamiliar-realism (ecological approaches) can co-exist  Architecture is no longer art, it is a technological system that responds to climate change. “Architecture as technology” The choice of materials has a lot to do with the amount of sustainability a building has. The more simplified the material, the better.

Reading #6 - Sustainable Buildings Initiatives

Image
Most contemporary or modern architects see the response towards climate change as an option. Only a few architects take into consideration the rise of climate change, leaving only a small collective responding to this problem. According to the book Buildings And Climate Change, the topic and knowledge on creating sustainable buildings, that help release less CO2 emissions, is not well known to most people's knowledge. For example, the book explains that developing countries have a low rate of knowledge and expertise in creating sustainable buildings with energy performance indicators. They may have some knowledge on how to save energy, but it is not enough. For example, in Wednesday's class, we discussed the popular belief that glass is a sustainable material, but unfortunately, that false information. Glass in reality is a harmful contributor in releasing carbon emissions due to the use and creation of glass. The topic and shared knowledge regarding the action towards clim...

Reading #5 - Architecture and Labor

Image
The concept of architecture is under a misconception that creating architectural designs is effortless and that “Architects don't do work”. Many people outside of the profession think this way about the field, as well as aspiring architects. Peggy Dreamer brought up an example of how this is frequently perceived about architects when she talked about listening to a panelist say “Architecture is not a career, it is a calling”. This would be translated as we don’t do work, we are simply creative. But this idea needs to come to a halt. “Art is work”. From the outside, we may see a piece of architecture as an effortless architectural work, but in reality, a lot of effort was put into it. To execute a final architectural product needs plenty of attention and revision. Art takes effort. When coming up with the final execution of architectural work, it is under revision by the client(s), architect(s), and structural engineer(s). Underneath that final product was a handful of flaws and a ...

Reading #4 - 3 Ecologies

Image
There are three ecologies that Felix Guattari would describe as the downfall of human-kind and the planet itself. The three are as follows:  Mental Ecology Social Ecology Environmental Ecology Mental Ecology touches base on pleasure and advertisement. Felix cannot stress enough that mental ecology can emerge “at any moment”- and that is because desires can appear at any moment. He brings up Freudianism, where people's subconscious thoughts hold a deeper meaning of desire. These fantasies/desires can be uncalled for at times, which is why it is preferred to “repress” these fantasies by using psychosis . Felix also includes that violence and negativity are something that people are taught- not born with. Violence and negativity are constructed into people and are engraved into their beliefs if it is constantly taught.  Social Ecology touches base on the media manipulating people's beliefs. This is evident, according to Felix, through the lenses of racism, women inequality, hate...

Reading #3 Deconstructivism

Image
IMAGE DESCRIPTION This image conveys the idea that some architects become starchitects by standing out from breaking away from what is typically seen in everyday architecture. But sometimes the goal of being unique can do more damage than good because it becomes less thoughtful and rational. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Uniqueness may create attention- good or bad- but it becomes detrimental for observing architects because it pushes this uncalled-for precedent for architecture.  SUMMARIES Delirious new york Rem Koolhaas This book touches base on Manhattan's inconsistency of character and architectural style. Rem called this phenomenon of inconsistency, “Manhattanism” - a human-made product “to live inside fantasy.” Because of Manhattan's risk to create whatever it wants to create in terms of architecture. This inspired observing architects to take the same risky approach on their work- and it was taken too far.  Manifesto Lebbeus Woods Lebbeus makes it clea...
